Pune Metro Rail is a public rapid transit system that serves the twin cities of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad and other areas in the metropolitan region.

The network has 2 operational lines – the Purple and Aqua lines – and a third line under construction. 

The Purple Line connects PCMC in Pimpri-Chinchwad with Swargate through 14 stations. The Aqua Line runs from Vanaz to Ramwadi through 16 stations.

Currently, the Purple Line operates between PCMC and Civil Court, while the Aqua Line operates from Vanaz to Ruby Hall Clinic. The upcoming Pune Metro Line 3 will connect the Civil Court Metro Station in Shivaji Nagar with the IT hub of Hinjawadi.

The Purple and Aqua lines of the network are operated and implemented by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro). Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) implements Line 3 of the metro network.

Pune Metro Routes and Lines

The metro in Pune comprises a total of 3 lines:

1. Purple Line (PCMC to Swargate)
2. Aqua Line (Vanaz to Ramwadi)
3. Line 3 (Civil Court to Hinjawadi and Maan)

The Purple and Aqua lines are currently partly operational. These routes will become fully operational by December 2023. The construction of Line 3 is in progress, and it will start operations in 2025. Once fully completed, these 3 lines will cover a total distance of approximately 55 km.

Pune Metro Route 1– Purple Line (PCMC to Swargate)

The Purple Line connects PCMC in the north to Swargate in the south. Also called Line 1 or the North-South Corridor, it covers a total distance of 16.59 km. The total number of stations on this Pune Metro route is 14.

This line is owned and operated by Maha Metro. The Purple Line started services on 6th March 2022 and is partly operational.

Currently, this line operates between PCMC and Civil Court, covering a distance of about 13.9 km in approx. 25 minutes. Out of the 14 stations, only 9 stations are presently in service.

The remaining 5 stations on this line will become operational by the end of 2022.

The PCMC – Swargate route connects many major localities, including PCMC (Pimpri Chinchwad), Bhosari, Shivaji Nagar, Civil Court, and Kasarwadi. The line has both elevated and underground stations.

Purple Line Extensions

The Maharashtra state government has approved 2 extensions on the Purple Pune Metro Line. The first extension runs from PCMC to Nigdi, while the second extension is from Swargate to Katraj. They are now awaiting approval from the central government.

According to the latest reports, both PCMC to Nigdi and Swargate to Katraj extensions will have 3 new stations each.

Pune Metro Route 2 – Aqua Line (Vanaz to Ramwadi)

The Aqua Line of the metro in Pune runs from Vanaz in the east to Ramwadi in the west. Inaugurated on 6th March 2022, this line is also named Line 2 or East-West Corridor. It covers a total distance of approximately 14.66 km. The route has a total of 16 stations on it.

Currently, the Aqua Line operates between Vanaz and Ruby Hall Clinic – this 9.7-km stretch has 12 operational stations. You can travel from Vanaz to Ruby Hall Clinic in about 30 minutes.

The remaining stretch from Bund Garden to Ramwadi with 4 stations is under construction. The whole route will become operational by the end of 2023.

The Vanaz – Ramwadi metro route connects several localities in the Pune region, such as Garware College, Deccan Gymkhana, Pune Railway Station, and others. This route has only elevated stations.

The owner and operator of this line is Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro).

Aqua Line Extensions

Maha Metro has proposed 2 extensions on the Aqua Line. The first extension is from Vanaz to Chandni Chowk, while the second extension runs from Ramwadi to Wagholi.

The Vanaz – Chandni Chowk extension will have 2 new stations. The tentative number of proposed stations on the Ramwadi to Wagholi extension is 11.

These 2 extensions are part of Phase 2 of the Pune Metro project. They are now awaiting approval from the state and central governments.

Pune Metro Line 3 (Civil Court – Hinjawadi)

Pune Metro Line 3, also called Puneri Metro, is currently under construction. It connects the central business district of Shivaji Nagar with the IT hub of Hinjawadi and Maan Village. Though not officially confirmed, this line is also called the Red Line.

The total length of the line is 23.3 km. The line will have 23 stations – Civil Court in Shivaji Nagar and Megapolis Circle in Hinjawadi will be the terminal stations.

The Civil Court Metro Station will be the interchange station to change lines from Line 3 to Purple Line or Aqua Line.

This Civil Court to Hinjawadi route also has stations at Infosys Phase II, Wipro Technologies, Balewadi Stadium, Baner, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Agriculture College, and many more localities. All 23 stations on this line will be elevated stations.

Unlike the Purple and Aqua lines implemented by Maha Metro, Line 3 will be implemented by Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) on a public-private partnership model.

PMRDA has appointed Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited (PICTMRL), a joint venture company established by Tata Realty and Siemens, to design, develop, operate, and finance this line.

According to the latest news reports, the Civil Court to Hinjawadi line will be completed by March 2025. Once completed, the total travel time on the route will be less than 40 minutes.

Pune Metro Station List

The total number of Pune Metro stations on Purple and Aqua Lines is 29. Of these, 20 stations are currently in service. Pune Metro Line 3, which is under construction, will have 23 stations.

The total number of stations on the network will be 51, with the Civil Court Metro Station in Shivaji Nagar serving as the interchange station between all three lines.

Pune Metro Station Design

The metro stations in Pune are designed based on some broad themes. These Pune Metro station design themes are:

1. Industrial style – represents the industrial development in the region)
2. Organic style – represents nature and greenery
3. Traditional Marathi motifs like Puneri Pagdi – showcase the rich history and culture of Pune
4. Contemporary and modern themes – reflect the overall development of the region

For instance, Deccan Gymkhana Metro Station and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Udyan Metro Station on the Aqua Line take inspiration from Puneri Pagdi, a traditional headgear used by Marathi soldiers.

Stations designed in the industrial style include PCMC and Bhosari (Nashik Phata), among others. The Metro station in Phugewadi features an organic and leaf-themed design, while the stations from Vanaz to Ramwadi showcase contemporary and modern designs.

Authorities have incorporated other cultural elements into some Pune Metro station designs. For instance, the PMC Metro Station on the Aqua Line takes inspiration from the traditional Marathi Wadas. Shivaji Nagar metro station features elements inspired by regal Peshwas and looks like a fort from the erstwhile era.

Nal Stop Metro Station, located close to the iconic Pune Film Institute, is a homage to Indian cinema.

Pune Metro Timings, Time Table, and Frequency

Pune Metro operates 16 hours a day, all days of the week. Given below is the detailed Pune Metro timetable:

• Pune Metro timings (both lines): From 6:00 am to 10:00 pm, all days of the week
• Frequency during peak hours* (both lines): Every 10 minutes
• Frequency during non-peak hours** (both lines): Every 15 minutes
• Halt time: 30 seconds

Pune Metro ticket charges range from INR 10 to INR 35, based on the distance between stations. Maha Metro also offers discounts to students, weekend travelers, etc.

Pune Metro Ticket Discounts for Students

Pune Maha Metro offers discounts to students traveling on metro trains. All students, from the school level to graduation, can avail of a 30% discount on tickets.

The discount is applicable all days of the week, both weekdays and weekends. To avail of the student discount on Pune Metro tickets, you must present a valid student ID card issued by your educational institution.

How to Buy Pune Metro Tickets?

You can travel in the metro trains in Pune using paper tickets, paperless e-tickets, or contactless travel cards. Here is how: 

Paper tickets from counters

You can buy traditional paper tickets from the counters at metro stations using cash or digital payment methods. It comes with a QR code. Scan it at the entry gate to board the train and scan it again at the exit gate. 

Paper tickets/e-tickets from vending machines 

All metro stations in Pune have ticket vending machines using which you can buy tickets using digital payment methods. You can either print the ticket or enter your phone number to get the eTicket on your phone. 

WhatsApp e-tickets 

The Pune Metro WhatsApp ticket booking number is 9420101990. If you send ‘Hi’ to this number, you will get a link to buy tickets online using digital payment methods. You can scan the QR code on the e-ticket to enter the trains.

eTickets booked through the app

You can book tickets through the Pune Metro ticket booking app. All you need to do is download the app on your Android or iOS device, register, and select the Book Tickets option on the home screen. You can enter your journey details and book tickets using net banking, credit/ cards, digital wallets, UPI, and other payment methods.

One Pune Card (Pune Metro Card)

One Pune Card is a contactless prepaid travel card you can use to travel on metro trains. When you have the card, you need not take tickets for each journey – tap the card at the entry and exit gates. The fare will be deducted directly from your One Pune Metro Card at the exit gate.

Pune Metro Phase 2 – Proposed Routes and the Route Map

Pune Metro Phase 2 is under consideration. According to reports, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has given approval for the Phase 2 proposal submitted by Maha Metro. The proposal now needs approval from the state and central governments.

The proposed Pune Metro Phase 2 will cover a total length of 82.5 km. It includes new lines and 2 extensions on the Aqua Line. The 36-km long High-Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR) is also part of Phase 2.
