What is the PM Yashasvi Yojana?

The PM Yashasvi Yojana is a Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment initiative for Other Backward Classes (OBCs), Economically Backward Classes (EBC) and Denotified Nomadic Tribes (DNT) students. There are 4 components of this scheme relevant to financial aid for students.

Pre-Matric Scholarship for OBC, EBC and DNT Students

This component of the PM Yashasvi scholarship provides a stipend of Rs 4000 per annum to eligible students enrolled in classes IX and X.

Post-Matric Scholarship for OBC, EBC and DNT Students

Eligible post-matric students can receive an annual allowance of Rs 5000 to Rs 20,000 under this component of the PM Yasasvi Yojana.

Top Class School Education for OBC, EBC and DNT Students

This is the key focus of the PM Yasasvi Yojana. There are 2 categories in this scheme. Students in classes IX and X may be awarded an annual scholarship of Rs 75,000. Students in classes XI and XII may be awarded an annual scholarship of Rs 1,25,000.

Top Class College Education for OBC, EBC and DNT Students

This component of the PM Yashasvi Yojana provides full financial support for eligible, meritorious students enrolled in notified institutions.

PM Yashasvi Yojana Pre-Matric Scholarship for OBC, EBC and DNT Students

The PM Yasasvi Yojana scholarship is aimed at full-time students enrolled in classes IX and X in a government school. The PM Yashasvi scholarship scheme offers a Rs 4000 annual scholarship to these students paid directly to their accounts or their parent’s accounts through an Aadhaar-based Based Payment System.

Other eligibility criteria include:

• The student must not violate school discipline
• Students must maintain a minimum of 75% attendance for the previous year
• The scholarship will not be given if the child has to repeat a class

This sub-scheme of the PM Yashasvi scholarship provides financial aid for students studying at the post-matriculation or post-secondary stages. PM Yasasvi Yojana scholarships are provided in 4 categories.

PM Yashasvi Yojana Top Class School Education for OBC, EBC and DNT Students

The PM Yashasvi Yojana Top Class School Education scholarship scheme for OBC, EBC and DNT students sanctions merit-based financial aid. It helps fund education for students in classes IX to XII. A limited number of scholarships are awarded each year under this scheme to students studying in select schools. PM Yasasvi Yojana scholarships are awarded in 2 categories.

Some of the key modalities of this scholarship scheme are:

• The student must be enrolled in a top performing school. These are schools known to consistently secure 100% pass percentage in classes X and XII. They may be government schools, private schools or aided schools.
• The schools must use an Aadhaar-Based Attendance System
• Each state and class has a limited number of PM Yashasvi scholarships that may be awarded.
• Funds are transferred directly to the beneficiary’s account through DBT mode by 15^th August each year.

PM Yashasvi Yojana Top Class College Education for OBC, EBC and DNT Students

The PM Yashasvi Yojana Top Class College Education component is designed to encourage students to pursue education beyond class XII. To be eligible, students must attend a full-time prescribed course in any of the notified institutions.

The PM Yasasvi Yojana scheme cannot be used to fund education for more than 2 siblings in a family. The tuition fee support will be paid directly to the educational institution through DBT mode. Other funds awarded will be transferred directly to the student’s account.

The scholarships provided by this component of the PM Yasasvi Yojana are:

• Tuition fee support for up to Rs 2 lakhs for students enrolled in private sector institutions and Rs 3.72 lakhs for students enrolled in Commercial Pilot Training and Type Rating Courses
• Living expenses of up to Rs 3000 per month
• Financial support for books and stationery of up to Rs 5000 per annum
• One-time assistance of up to Rs 45,000 for the purchase of a computer/ laptop and accessories

PM Yashasvi Yojana Eligibility

The PM Yashasvi Yojana aims at helping students from economically backward families pursue higher education. Common eligibility criteria for all components of the PM Yasasvi Yojana are:

• The student must be an Indian citizen
• Students must belong to OBC, EBC, or DNT families
• The family’s annual income must not exceed Rs.2,50,000/- per annum
• The student must not benefit from any other central government educational scholarship
• In the case of boys, only 2 sons of a family are eligible for this scholarship. There is no such restriction for girls
• Students must have scored at least 60% in the previous year’s exams
• 30% of these PM Yashasvi scholarships are reserved for girls.

In addition to the above, each component of the scheme may have additional eligibility criteria.

PM Yashasvi Scheme Documents

To prove eligibility for a PM Yashasvi Yojana scholarship, applicants must have the following documents:

PM Yashasvi Scheme Registration

All applicants must register themselves to benefit from the PM Yasasvi Yojana. The Pradhan Mantri Yashasvi Yojana online registration is an easy process. There is no registration fee. Students can have only 1 OTR ID. However, parents and legal guardians can have up to 2 OTR IDs for their children/ wards.

Students will require an active mobile number and a smartphone for PM Yashasvi Yojana registration. It is important to note that registered students will have to later apply for the PM Yashasvi scholarship.

The Yashasvi Yojana official website provides numerous details on the scholarship. However, applicants must register on the National Scholarship Portal. The key steps for Pradhanmantri Yashasvi Yojana registration are:

Step 1: Visit the National Scholarship Portal

Step 2: Click on the One Time Registration (OTR) link

Step 3: Click on Register yourself

Step 4: Read the guidelines, accept the terms and click on the Next button

Step 5: Enter your mobile number and click on the Get OTP button. Enter the OTP as received via SMS and the captcha code. Click on the verify button.

An OTR ID will be issued on completing these steps. You can then complete the eKYC part of the Pradhan Mantri Yashasvi Yojana online registration process. You may need to download the NSP OTR app on your android device.

PM Yashasvi Scheme Apply Online

Once you have completed the Pradhan Mantri Yashasvi Yojana online registration process, you can apply for the PM Yashasvi scholarship. The steps for PM Yashasvi Yojana online apply are:

Step 1: Visit the National Scholarship Portal and click on Apply for Scholarship

Step 2: Log in with your OTR ID and password. Enter the captcha code and click on the Login button

Step 4: Select the PM Yasasvi Yojana scholarship

Step 5: Follow the online instructions to complete the application form

Step 6: Upload scanned copies of the required documents and submit your application.

PM Yashasvi Yojana Exam Date and Syllabus

When the PM Yashasvi Scholarship was announced, eligible students were initially required to take a test. Students were issued a Yashasvi Yojana admit card and needed to take a multiple-choice online test. However, closer to the PM Yashasvi Yojana exam date 2023, this test was cancelled. Instead, PM Yasasvi Yojana applicants were evaluated based on marks obtained in the previous class.

Yashasvi Yojana Scholarship Selection

Each state is allotted scholarship slots based on its OBC population.

After the PM scholarship last date, all applications are sent for verification to the school Nodal officers. A merit list for boys and girls in each class is then created for every state. This list is based on the marks secured in the previous academic year. The state government then awards scholarships to the most meritorious students.
