How To Get An International Driving License From India

When you travel internationally, having a driving license alone does not allow you to drive a vehicle outside India. International driving license is a must if you want to drive a vehicle outside India.
This is a permit that gives motorists the right to drive internationally. It contains a translation of your driving license. This document can also be used as your identity proof since it will contain a photograph of the license holder.
Anyone with a valid driving license can apply for an international driving license if they are traveling abroad to countries that allow you to drive with this permit.

An international driving license from India is valid for 1 year from the date it was issued.

To apply for an international driving license, you must meet the following criteria:
1. You must have a valid permanent driving license
2. You must be at least 18 years old

It is useful to put together all the documents required before you start the application process. You will need the following documents to apply for an international driving license:
1. 3 copies of a recent passport-sized photograph
2. Your driving license and a copy of the same
3. A copy of your passport
4. Proof of a valid visa
5. Copy of your flight tickets
6. Fee payment receipt
7. Form 1A – medical certificate
8. 4A- International driving license application form

To apply for an Indian international driving permit (IDP) online, here are the steps to follow.
Step 1: Visit the Sarathi Parivahan website and select your state from the drop-down menu.
Step 2: Click on the icon for ‘Apply for International Driving Permit (IDP)
Step 3: Read the instruction and click on Continue. You can also download Form 1-A from this page.
Step 4: Enter your driving license number and date of birth. Click on the button Get DL Details

Step 5: Check the details as per your driving license and confirm that they are correct. Select your state and RTO. Click Proceed.

Step 6: Enter your mobile number, email address and address details. Click on Confirm
Step 7: Click on the box that says Issue International Driving Permit. Click on Proceed.
Step 8: Enter your city and country you were born in, your passport number and passport validity date. Select the country for which you have been given a visa from the drop-down menu. You will also have to enter your visa number and visa validity. Select the category of vehicles for which you seek an IDP.
Step 9: When you click Confirm, a side box will open. Tick the self-declaration box. If you want to be an organ donor box, tick the second box as well. Enter the captcha code and click Submit.
Step 10: Note down your application number and click on Next.
Step 11: you will now need to upload supporting documents. Click on Proceed.
Step 12: Enter your application number and date of birth. Click to Submit.
Step 13: Verify your details and click on OK
Step 14: You will need to upload a copy of your passport, visa and driving license. Select the document you want to upload and the type of proof from the drop-down menu. Enter the document number, issuing authority name and issue date. Click on the ‘Choose File’ button to open a window and select the file to be uploaded. Click on Upload and then on Confirm. Follow the same process for the other 2 documents.
Step 15: When all the uploads are done, you will be able to see a green tick mark next to each document. Click on the ‘Next’ button
Step 16: You will be redirected to the application status page. Click on Proceed to upload photograph and signature.
Step 17: Click on the ‘Browse’ button to select the appropriate file for your photograph upload and similarly for a scanned copy of your signature. Click on ‘Upload and View’ and then ‘Confirm’. Click on the button to
Save Photo & Signature Image Files’.
Step 18: You will be again redirected to the application status page. Click on Proceed for fee payment.
Step 19: Select your preferred payment gateway, enter the captcha code and click on ‘Pay Now’.
Step 20: Click on the box to agree to terms and conditions and Proceed for Payment.
