Women approaching the OSCs may avail of temporary shelter in the centres for up to 5 days. The woman’s children up to the age of 12 years may also stay in the centre.

The scheme provides help to women over the age of 18 who fall into one of the following categories:

  • Women who have been deserted without any social/ economic support
  • Women rendered homeless due to natural disasters
  • Women released from jail and who have no family or social support

  • Trafficked women/girls 
  • HIV/AIDs patients with no social or economic support

As part of this central government scheme for women, every district will have a Shakti Sadan that provides temporary residential accommodation with provisions for food, clothing and medical aid. Women can also receive:

Victims of domestic violence may stay here for up to 1 year. In other cases, women can stay in the Shakti Sadan for up to 3 years. Women over the age of 55 years may be permitted to stay for up to 5 years after which they may be shifted to old age homes or other institutions.

8. Nari Adalat

Nari Adalat is a platform to give women an alternative Grievance Redressal Mechanism to resolve instances of harassment, subversion, curtailment of rights and entitlements faced by women at the Gram Panchayat level.
