UAN Number – An Overview
Universal Account Number or UAN is a unique 12-digit identification number assigned by the Ministry of Labour and Employment to employers and employees. UAN number is required to make contributions to an EPF account. Irrespective of switching jobs from one employer to another, every individual can use a single EPF UAN.

How to get a UAN number?
You can generate your UAN number yourself or ask your employer to generate it for you.
Self-generated UAN card
Step 1: Visit https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/
Step 2: Click on Know Your UAN
Step 3: Enter your mobile number and the Captcha code and request OTP. Enter the OTP as received via SMS. You will need to enter a fresh Captcha code as well.
Step 4: Enter your name, date of birth and details of either your Aadhaar number, PAN number or Member ID and the Captcha code. Click on Show my UAN
Employer-generated UAN
Your first employer can generate a UAN for you. The documents required for this are:
· PAN card
· Aadhaar card
· Bank account number, branch and IFSC code
· Proof of address
· ESIC Card
What are the benefits of a Universal Account Number?
There are many benefits to having a Universal Account Number. The system came into effect in October 2014 and makes it easier for individuals to manage their PF accounts. Some of the benefits of having a UAN number are:
· All PF account details are maintained in one place
· UAN makes managing a PF account easy irrespective of when you switch jobs
· Employers can use EPF UAN to see the employee’s Provident Fund history
· UAN can be used to transfer and withdraw money from the PF account at any time

How to do UAN registration?
When you start working, you can follow these steps for UAN registration online.
Step 1: Visit https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/
Step 2: Click on Direct UAN Allotment by Employees
Step 3: Enter the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar account and the Captcha code
Step 4: Enter the OTP as received via SMS
Step 5: Consent to being employed in a private establishment and click on the submit button
Step 6: Select your employment category
Step 7: If you know the PF Code number of the establishment, click on the Yes box and enter the number. Else, select ‘No’ and enter your Identity number, type of document proving your identity and upload a copy of the same.
Step 8: Enter your Aadhaar number and the Captcha code. Click on the Generate OTP button
Step 9: Enter the OTP and the captcha code. Give your consent and click submit
You will receive the UAN number via SMS on your registered mobile number.

How to activate UAN?
You can activate UAN online. The key steps for UAN activation are:
Step 1: Visit https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/
Step 2: Click on Activate UAN
Step 3: Enter your UAN, Member ID, PAN number, Aadhaar number and personal details. Enter the Captcha code and click on the button to get the authorization pin
Step 4: Enter the authorization pin as received via SMS on your registered phone number. Click on the Authorize and Activate button
How to access UAN passbook?
You can access your UAN passbook online.
Step 1: Visit the official EPF website: https://www.epfindia.gov.in/site_en/index.php
Step 2: Select ‘for Employees’ under the services tab
Step 3: Select Member Passbook under the Services menu
Step 4: Enter your UAN number and Password. Complete the verification equation and click on the Login button
Step 5: Select your member ID
The passbook will be displayed and you can check entries and the current balance.
How to do pf balance check with UAN number?
The steps for PF balance check with UAN number are:
Step 1: Visit https://www.epfindia.gov.in/site_en/index.php
Step 2: From the services tab, select ‘for Employees’
Step 3: Choose Member Passbook from the Services menu
Step 4: Enter your UAN number, password, captcha code and click on the Login button
Step 5: Select the relevant member ID
You will be able to see your PF balance and see your transaction history
Can you check PF balance check without UAN number?
There is no way for a PF balance check without UAN number.
How to set UAN password?
If you have forgotten your UAN password, you can set a new one online:
Step 1: Visit https://www.epfindia.gov.in/site_en/index.php
Step 2: Click on forgot password
Step 3: Enter your UAN number and the Captcha code. Click on the Submit button. Request for an OTP via SMS
Step 4: Enter the OTP as received via SMS
Step 5: Once the OTP is verified, you can enter the new password. Enter it again to confirm the password. It should contain at least 7 characters with 4 alphabets that have at least 1 capital letter, small letter, special character and 2 digits.
How to include photograph on the UAN Card?
You can add your photograph on your UAN card. Here’s how you can do that:
Step 1: Visit https://www.epfindia.gov.in/site_en/index.php
Step 2: Log in with your UAN and password
Step 3: Select ‘Profile’ from the drop-down menu under View
Step 4: Click on Change Photo
Step 5: Click on Browse to select a photograph in JPEG or PNG format from your computer
Step 6: Click on Preview and then on Upload Photograph.
How to check UAN claim status?
The steps to check your UAN claim status are:
Step 1: Visit https://www.epfindia.gov.in/site_en/index.php
Step 2: From the services menu, select ‘for Employees’
Step 3: Select Know Your Claim Status from the Services menu
Step 4: Log in with your UAN and password
Step 5: Select your member ID
Step 6: Click on View Claim Status
You will be able to see the claim ID, receipt date, form type and status
How to check UAN status?
If you submit a claim, you can check the UAN status online
Step 1: Visit the official EPF website: https://www.epfindia.gov.in/site_en/index.php
Step 2: Select ‘for Employees’ from the services drop-down menu
Step 3: Click on Services to see the drop-down menu and select Know Your Claim Status
Step 4: Use your UAN and password to log in
Step 5: Select the member ID
Step 6: Click on View Claim Status
What to do if you have been allotted two UAN numbers?
Having more than one UAN number is a problem for all individuals. You can update your Universal Account Number online and merge the two EPF UAN accounts online. Here’s what you need to do:
Step 1: Visit the official EPF website: https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/
Step 2: Log in with your UAN and password
Step 3: Select One Member – One EPF Account (Transfer Request) from the Online Services menu
Step 4: Scroll down past the details of your UAN accounts
Step 5: Select whether you want the UAN accounts to be attested by the previous or present employer. The latter is preferable
Step 6: If you choose to attest via your present employer, enter your Old UAN. Click on Get Details
Step 7: Select your old employer from the drop-down menu and click on get OTP
Step 8: Enter the OTP and Submit
Step 9: If you have to merge accounts from more than one employer, repeat Steps 7 and 8 for each employer.
How to link multiple EPF accounts with your UAN number?
You cannot have more than one UAN number linked to your EPF account. Here’s how you can link multiple EPF UAN accounts with a single Universal Account Number.
Step 1: Visit https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/
Step 2: Use your UAN and password to log in to your account
Step 3: Hover over Online Services and click on One Member – One EPF Account (Transfer Request)
Step 4: Select who you would prefer to have your UAN accounts to be attested by. The present employer is preferable
Step 5: enter your Old UAN and click on Get Details
Step 6: Select the employer ID linked to the old UAN account and click on get OTP
Step 7: Enter the OTP and Submit
Step 8: If more than one employer is linked to the old UAN, repeat Steps 6 and 7 for each employer.
How to link Aadhaar with UAN card online?
Follow these steps to link your UAN card with your Aadhaar card.
Step 1: Visit https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/
Step 2: Log in to your account with your UAN and password
Step 3: Select KYC from the Manage menu
Step 4: Click on Aadhaar to update your Aadhaar details
Step 5: Enter your details as per your Aadhaar card and click Save
