Officially called Namma Metro, Bengaluru Metro is a public transport metro system that serves Bangalore. It is owned and operated by the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL).

Currently, the network has two operational lines, namely the Green Line and the Purple Line. These two lines, together, have 66 stations spread across the city.

The construction of Yellow and Pink lines under Bangalore Metro Phase 2 is in progress and expected to be completed by 2024.

1. Green Line Metro Route

The Green Line metro route covers a distance of about 30.32 km. It connects Silk Institute in the southern part of the city with Nagasandra in the northwestern portion.

Jayanagar, JP Nagar, Majestic, Yeshwanthpur, Peenya, Rajaji Nagar, Majestic, and Lalbagh are some of the major stations on Bangalore Metro Green Line.

The northern extension (Nagasandra to Madavara) of the Green Line Metro route is under construction. Once completed, the following stations will be operational:

Bangalore Metro Phase 2

The Bangalore Metro Phase 2 involves the extension of Purple and Green lines and the construction of two new lines, namely the Yellow Line and the Pink Line.

The Yelachenahalli – Silk Institute route (Green Line extension) under Bengaluru Metro Phase 2 has already been completed and inaugurated.

The Mysore Road – Challaghatta route (Purple Line extension) under Bangalore Metro Phase 2 has also been completed. The route is operational from August 29, 2021. Please note that currently, the last station on the route is Kengeri. The metro station at Challaghatta will be operational only in 2023.

Other proposed routes and lines of Phase 2 are currently under construction.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do the BMRCL recharge through the portal and mobile app.

Step 1: Visit the BMRCL website.
Step 2: Choose the Quick Top Up option. (You can also recharge your Bangalore metro smart card by registering on the website and creating an account.)

Step 2: Open the app > Click on the Top Up icon > You will be asked to register on the app through mobile OTP verification.

Yes. You can. To recharge your Namma Metro card using Paytm, Open Paytm app > Go to Recharge and Pay Bills > Choose Metro > Choose Bangalore Metro > Enter your card number and the amount > Procced > Complete the transaction using your preferred mode of payment.

What is the minimum balance for the Bangalore metro smart card?

The minimum balance for Bengaluru metro smart card is INR 50.

What is the validity of the Bangalore Metro card?

The validity of your Bengaluru Metro smart card is 10 years. However, after the recharge, you must tap it at the automatic entry/exit gates of any station (that is, use the card for at least one journey) after 60 minutes and within 7 days.

If you fail to do this, the money on your card will lapse.
If you couldn’t present your card at the entry/exit gates within 7 days, you can visit the customer care center at any metro station and request a manual update within 60 days of the recharge.

Can I check my Bangalore metro smart card balance online?

Currently, the BMRCL website doesn’t have any feature that allows you to check your Bangalore metro smart card balance online. However, you can check the balance amount on your card in the following ways:
At the entry/exit gates: You can scan your card at the entry/exit gates of any metro station. Your Bengaluru metro smart card balance will be shown on the scanner screen.

Through the Bangalore Metro app: Download the app > Register on the app through OPT verification >  After registration, click on Top Up > Enter your card number > Click on the Save button > You can now see the status of your card (active or not) and your Namma metro card balance. What is the starting time of the Bangalore Metro?

Currently, the Bengaluru metro starting time is 7.00 am on all days for both Green and Purple lines. It is the modified time due to the pandemic.

The full form of BMRCL is Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited. It is a joint venture by the Central Government and the State Government of Karnataka.

What is not allowed in Bangalore Metro?

You are not allowed to carry the following items on Bengaluru metro trains. Surgical tool kits and Kirpans are exempted from this list, following the procedure.
1. Sharp objects like knives, swords, meat cleavers, etc.

3. Explosive materials like gunpowder, fireworks, realistic replica of explosives, etc.
4. Tools like axes, hatchets, hammers, crowbars, screwdrivers, etc.
5. Flammable items, such as petroleum, wet batteries, alcohol, all kinds of spirits, etc.
6. Radioactive substances
7. Poisonous substances
8. Acids and other corrosives
9. Oxidizing substances

11. Pet birds or animals
12. Other prohibited items like carcasses of dead animals, human ashes, unsealed raw meat or fish, manure, unsealed plant saplings, etc.

What is the Metro Mitra app? 

Metro Mitra is an app exclusively for Bangalore Metro passengers to book autos from metro stations. The objective of the app is to offer last-mile connectivity to passengers. Those who book autos using Metro Mitra need to pay only the meter charge and a flat charge of INR 10 per ride. 

The app is brought to users by the Autorickshaw Drivers’ Union (ARDU) in collaboration with the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). The Metro Mitra app is available for use from 6th September 2023. Using this app, you can book rides from a network of ARDU-verified drivers. 

One of the unique features is that passengers need not download the Metro Mitra app. Auto drivers will be equipped with the app, though. You can book autos through Metro Mitra using the QR codes displayed at Bangalore Metro station premises. You will receive a link with instructions – follow the instructions on the link and book autos.

ARDU plans to integrate the Metro Mitra app with the Bangalore Metro WhatsApp chatbot available at 8105556677). Once done, you can also book autos through the WhatsApp chatbot. 

How to book autos using the Metro Mitra app?

To book autos using the Metro Mitra app, you don’t have to download the app. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to book autos through Metro Mitra from Bangalore metro stations:
Step 1: After arriving at the metro station, look for the Metro Mitra QR code displayed on the premises.
Step 2: Scan the QR code using your smartphone. 
Step 3: The code will redirect you to a link where you can see all major landmarks within 5 km of the metro station.
Step 4: Choose the landmark nearest your destination and confirm the ride. 
Step 5: You will receive an OTP for the ride. You will also receive details of the driver and vehicle. 
Step 6: Share the OTP with the driver and start the ride.
Note: The app currently allows you to book autos from metro stations – you cannot use the app to book rides to metro stations.

What are the auto charges in Metro Mitra?

Metro Mitra operates on the meter charge system. Passengers who book autos using Metro Mitra will have to pay only the meter fare for the distance they travel. Metro Mitra users will also have to pay an extra flat charge of INR 10 per trip towards app maintenance and trip pick-up fees. 

Currently, the meter fare in Bangalore is INR 30 (a base fare) for the first 2 kilometers and INR 15 for each additional kilometer.
